The Building Inspectors are certified by the State of Wisconsin for inspection of residential dwellings, commercial structures, residential and commercial plumbing, heating\ventilation\air-conditioning systems, and residential electric. The Building Inspectors review plans; issue building permits and perform inspections. The main objective for obtaining a building permit is to ensure that a structure is constructed according to code requirements making sure the structure is safe from defects and to protect the owner. Building permits are required by city ordinance. If a permit is required, but not obtained, a fine may be imposed. In addition to the fine, the permit would still need to be obtained.

A building permit is required for the following:

  • New residential buildings

  • New commercial buildings

  • Residential additions/remodels/repairs

  • Commercial additions/remodels/repairs

  • Any deck addition

  • Fencing

  • Swimming Pools

  • Reroofing

  • Residing

  • Windows

  • Driveways/public sidewalks

  • Commercial signage

  • New furnace/retrofit furnace/air conditioning

  • Residential/Commercial electrical

  • Plumbing

  • HVAC

You do not need a building permit for the following projects:

  • Repainting the interior or exterior of your building

  • Installing storm windows and screens

  • Installing gutters and downspouts

  • Installing garage doors

  • Private sidewalk

  • Playground equipment

Information needed for a building permit:

  • Name of the applicant

  • Property address

  • Type of improvement

  • Name, address and phone number of the person completing the work, as well as license number, if applicable

  • Estimated cost

  • Square footage of improvement, if applicable

  • A detailed diagram with all dimensions

Additional information may be required, depending on the project. The above list is not all inclusive. Most projects require a permit though a fee may not be charged if the cost, including labor, is under $500.

  • Any Electrical work

  • Any HVAC work

  • Building Rough - Framing, Insulation, Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC

  • Final Inspection for Occupancy
